Environment Canada has issued a warning for residents in parts of northwestern Ontario about a potential tornado.

Red tornado warnings are currently active for Sioux Narrows, Nestor Falls, Morson, Dryden, and Vermilion Bay.

Meteorologists have been monitoring a severe thunderstorm that may be producing a tornado as it moves eastward.

The red tornado warnings were first issued for the Kenora region, but that alert has now been downgraded to an orange tornado watch.

Strong winds, large hail, and heavy rainfall could also occur, according to Environment Canada.

“Take cover immediately in a basement, interior room, or a sturdy shelter when threatening weather approaches,” the alert states. “If no shelter is available, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris. If you are out on the water when threatening weather approaches, return to shore and seek shelter, if possible. Otherwise, move away from the path of the tornado to escape. Wear your lifejacket, lie face down and protect your head.”

The OPP in Kenora are advising drivers about road closures and flooding caused by heavy rains.

Bernier Drive and Transmitter Road are experiencing significant flooding as well.
