Funding Boost for Indigenous Forestry Initiatives in Northwestern Ontario

The provincial government is allocating over $1.1 million to support forestry initiatives that involve Indigenous communities.

This funding, provided through the Forest Biomass Program, backs projects at Constance Lake, Webequie and Kasabonika First Nations, as well as a group of First Nations in the Fort Frances area.

Kevin Holland, Associate Minister of Forestry and Forest Products, emphasizes that backing Indigenous forestry efforts is essential for the overall health of the industry.

“Indigenous collaboration and partnerships are vital parts of the roadmap,” says Holland.

“And our government recognizes that Indigenous communities and their members have close relationships with the land and a strong and growing interest in sustainable forestry development.”

Among those set to benefit is Constance Lake First Nation, which will receive $250,000 to develop plans for a flexible energy system converting forest biomass into green biofuel.

A similar amount will go to Apitipi Anicinapek Nation to explore forestry opportunities and enhance workforce skills through assessments and training workshops.

Webequie First Nation has been awarded $250,000 to aid in planning a 25-megawatt electricity facility that runs on forest biomass.

Wanagekong Biiwega’iganan Clean Energy Corporation will utilize $250,000 to research biomass supply chains, finalize permitting processes, and establish partnerships for a proposed bio-refinery in Fort Frances.

Kasabonika Lake First Nation is set to receive $158,750 to design a sustainable wood energy program alongside a sawmill project aimed at cutting down on diesel fuel use.

“We reviewed all applications that come in from participants or those interested in participating in the program,” says Holland.

“It’s a review process that takes place, and it was really (about what) fit in with our roadmap and what the goals of the Ontario government are now in protecting our forestry sector moving forward.”

Holland mentions these projects together could create over 200 jobs.
