Ontario’s Education Minister says that discussions with the union representing teachers and other support staff will kick off soon.

The unions have been pushing for early negotiations rather than waiting until contracts run out.

At present, the contracts are set to expire at the end of August.

Paul Calandra expresses a desire to prevent any interruptions when the new school year begins.

“The ultimate goal is to keep kids in the classroom in September. I know that’s what our educators want. We will be working all summer to do that,” says Calandra.

Some major concerns from the union include attracting and keeping staff, reducing class sizes, and providing more resources for students and teachers.

Calandra expects challenging negotiations ahead but remains hopeful that an agreement can be reached before the next school year starts.

“They want the absolute best deal for the people that they represent, and they’re going to fight very, very hard for that,” says Calandra.

“I want the same thing for teachers. I want the absolute best for teachers, and I want a fair deal for taxpayers. And I think we’re going to get there.”
