October 1, 2026: Thunder Bay Starts October Mild and Windy Before a Cooler Weekend

THUNDER BAY – WEATHER – Thursday, October 1, 2026 – Thunder Bay kicks off October with fairly mild temperatures, although gusty west winds will be noticeable throughout the day. A cooler and calmer Friday is expected before clouds gather on Saturday, which could bring more chances of rain by Saturday night.

This morning feels a bit nippy for those walking or cycling.

Environment Canada predicts temperatures today to be above the typical early-October average before a distinct drop as we head into the weekend.

Current Conditions

At 4:00 a. m. EDT, Thunder Bay Airport reported clear skies and a temperature of 11.6°C.

The humidity level was at 80 percent, with a dew point of 8.2°C. Winds were blowing from the west-northwest at 10 km/h, while barometric pressure stood at 100.8 k Pa and was decreasing. Visibility extended to 24 kilometers.

The weather on Thursday will become more breezy as the day progresses. Environment Canada indicates there’s a 30 percent chance of showers early this morning, followed by clearing skies. West winds are expected to pick up to 30 km/h, gusting up to 50 km/h.

The high temperature for the day is set to reach 19°C, which is significantly warmer than Thunder Bay’s seasonal norm of about 14°C. The UV index will register at 4, indicating moderate levels.

This evening will be partly cloudy with an overnight chance of showers at around 30 percent. Northwest winds at speeds of around 20 km/h may gust up to 40 km/h. The overnight low is expected to be about 8°C.

Friday, October 2

Expect Friday to offer the sunniest weather during this three-day stretch.

According to Environment Canada’s forecast, sunny skies are in store with highs reaching around 15°C. Winds should not be as significant as they were on Thursday.

The night will turn clear and much colder as temperatures drop close to freezing at approximately 0°C.

If you’re out early on Saturday morning, get ready for near-freezing conditions, especially in lower areas outside downtown.

Saturday, October 3

On Saturday, cloud cover is set to increase as another weather system approaches Northwestern Ontario.

The daytime high will likely only reach about 12°C-giving Saturday a more autumn-like vibe than previous days.

Clouds will linger into Saturday night along with a chance of rain sitting at around 40 percent and an overnight low hovering near 4°C.

You’ll find Thursday’s weather mild enough for just a light jacket in the afternoon; however, strong westerly winds could make open areas feel chillier than expected. A wind-resistant layer might come in handy near waterfronts and other exposed spots.

For Friday’s forecasted layers are recommended since it should feel pleasant under sunny skies during the afternoon but temperatures will drop rapidly after dark. You’ll want that warmer jacket handy on Friday evening when it gets closer to freezing.

Sweater or fleece under your fall jacket should do nicely for Saturday’s wear. If you’re planning outdoor activities on Saturday evening, consider bringing along a light waterproof shell or an umbrella due to possible showers later in the night.

This time of year typically sees Thunder Bay’s average high around 14°C while normal lows hover near about 2°C-making Thursday’s anticipated high of nearly double quite mild for October’s first day.
The quick changes in temperature aren’t unusual here in Northwestern Ontario during autumn when warm air can swiftly switch out for cooler air following passing fronts.
