Ontario has set aside $15 million to create 1,312 new seats at Lakehead University and Confederation College in Thunder Bay.
This initiative aims to equip students for sought-after jobs in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and maths), health care, education, and skilled trades.
This is part of a broader $1.7-billion plan to add 70,000 new seats throughout Ontario that was announced by the province in May.
“Our province’s greatest strength is our highly skilled workforce – and those workers are trained at our world-class colleges and universities,” Nolan Quinn, minister of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security, said in a news release.
“This investment is supporting the largest seat expansion in Ontario in more than a decade and will ensure more students have the opportunity to train for good-paying careers that protect and strengthen our communities, industries and province.”
The newly funded 1,062 seats at Lakehead University consist of 830 seats for STEM programs, 225 seats for education programs, and seven seats for health programs.
At Confederation College, the additional 250 seats include 132 for health programs, 73 for trades programs, and 45 for STEM programs.
“We appreciate Ontario’s investment in programs that prepare learners for in-demand careers across northwestern Ontario,” Michelle Salo, Confederation’s president, said in the release.
“This approval supports new capacity in aviation, electrical and nursing programs and provides funding for existing nursing capacity. We look forward to continuing our work with the province to advance additional partnership opportunities and support access to training closer to home for learners across the region.”
