According to the latest update from Ontario’s Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) released Saturday evening, there are currently 130 active wildfires in northwestern Ontario.
Out of these, 27 fires are not under control, five are being held, seven are under control, and the remaining ones are being monitored.
By Saturday evening, six new fires were confirmed in the northwest:
Fort Frances 47 (FOR047) was found near Obikoba Lake, about seven kilometres west of Highway 502. This 0.1-hectare fire has been extinguished. Fort Frances 48 (FOR048) is situated near Lower Manitou Lake, around 15 kilometres west of Highway 502. The 0.1-hectare fire is now under control. Kenora 23 (KEN023) was located on Lake of the Woods, close to Rat Portage First Nation. This fire has been put out as well. Thunder Bay 64 (THU064) is near Wabinosha Bay, approximately 12 kilometres east of Highway 527. The size of this fire is also at 0.1 hectares and remains uncontrolled. Nipigon 85 (NIP085) is located south of Lake Nipigon, about 14 kilometres west of Highway 585. The situation here is stable as it’s being held. Sioux Lookout 104 (SLK104) was found near Lake St. Joseph, roughly 29 kilometres northwest of Highway 599. This small fire has been extinguished.
The largest wildfire in the area, known as Thunder Bay 36, continues to be out of control with a size exceeding more than 313,000 hectares. A NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) has also been issued for this region.
“Additional crews arrived on the fire line today from Alberta Wildfire,” AFFES stated on Saturday evening. “Fire crews continue locating and putting out hot spots along the perimeter while helicopter bucketing operations provide support.”
“Heavy equipment operators have made significant progress in building fire guards. Protection efforts for values at risk remain ongoing,” they added.

Evacuation Orders and Alerts
Evacuation orders or alerts still apply for areas near these fires: If you’re under evacuation orders you must leave immediately; if you’re under evacuation alerts you should prepare to evacuate soon. The Ministry of Natural Resources’ Thunder Bay-Ignace District has issued implementation orders related to these fires: Dryden fires numbered 34, 35 and 36. Fort Frances 14. Thunder Bay fires numbered 36, 54 and 56. These implementation orders restrict travel around these areas affected by fires. A restricted fire zone remains in effect across northwestern Ontario and part of northeastern Ontario which prohibits open-air burning including campfires. The forest fire danger rating shows low to moderate levels across most parts of northwestern Ontario; however there are some high-risk pockets within Thunder Bay, Dryden and Kenora management sectors.Highway Closures
The province’s interactive highway map indicates that these roads are closed due to wildfire activity: All lanes on Lac des Mille Lacs Road from Inwood Road to Highway 17 are closed. Highway 811 is closed except for local traffic leaving the area. Highway 527 remains shut down both ways between Tertiary Highway 811 and Armstrong. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) advise people for their safety as well as that of emergency responders to: Stay clear from affected regions and avoid going to wildfire scenes just for photos or videos. Stay calm while following all evacuation orders along with emergency instructions given by local authorities. Avoid unnecessary travel within impacted areas. Keep up-to-date with official sources regarding information or evacuation updates. Stay away from evacuated locations until it’s declared safe by authorities. Help maintain clear roadways so emergency personnel can work safely and effectively.
