A father and daughter who tragically lost their lives in a serious Highway 401 accident in Mississauga last week have been named.
Ralph Crane, 80, and his daughter, Sheri-Lynn Crane-Gormley, 53, both from Cambridge, passed away in the July 15 incident occurring in the eastbound express lanes of Highway 401 near Dixie Road.
The Ontario Provincial Police haven’t released their names yet, but they were revealed through an obituary shared by Corbett Funeral Home.
As per the obituary, they were on their way to Toronto Pearson International Airport to kick off what had become a yearly summer trip to Bell Island, N. L. This journey held special significance for them as it’s where Ralph and his wife, Cynthia, were born and first met, returning there together each year.
“They were on their way to the airport to begin their annual journey to Bell Island, Newfoundland, where Ralph and his beloved wife, Cynthia, were both born, first met, and returned together each summer to the home and community they cherished so deeply,” the obituary states.
According to police reports, the crash took place just before 9 a. m. when two vehicles collided due to slowing traffic in the eastbound express lanes. Crane and Crane-Gormley were passengers in a silver Honda CR-V that was hit from behind by another car.
Sadly, both were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Honda along with another passenger and a Mercedes SUV driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to hospital.
The collision led to several hours of closure for the eastbound express lanes causing significant traffic delays throughout Highway 401 and Highway 410 before it reopened later that afternoon.
The obituary describes them as people who dedicated themselves fully to their families.
Crane was remembered as a humble retired international business executive with Preformed Line Products. His greatest joy came from family. A lifelong music lover who could play almost any instrument by ear; he was affectionately called “Poppy” by his grandchildren for his generosity and support of everyone around him.
Crane-Gormley worked as a medical clerk at Cambridge Memorial Hospital. She was seen as warm-hearted with kindness that made a lasting impression on all she met. Her family shared that her greatest happiness came from her daughter Alysha while she devoted herself fully to her husband Jamie Gormley and their blended family.
The obituary calls the accident “horrific.” Investigators haven’t released any details about what caused it yet.
The OPP’s investigation is still ongoing. They urge anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage to reach out to the Mississauga OPP detachment.
Visitation for Ralph Crane and Sheri-Lynn Crane-Gormley will take place on July 24 at Corbett Funeral Home in Cambridge followed by a funeral service on July 25.
