Update on Northwestern Ontario’s Wildfires: August 2

As of the evening of August 1, eight new wildfires were reported in northwestern Ontario, raising the number of active fires in the area to 130.

The newly identified fires include:

Sioux Lookout 111, located near Sunlight Lake, around 15 kilometres north of Lac Seul. This fire covers 0.1 hectares and is under control. Sioux Lookout 112, situated north of Schist Lake, about seven kilometres north of Highway 516. This fire spans 1.5 hectares and is not under control. Fort Frances 57, near Mang Lake, roughly four kilometres northwest of Highway 502. The fire is also at 0.1 hectares and is not contained. Fort Frances 58 can be found between Konigson Lake and Calder Lake; this fire measures 0.1 hectares and remains uncontrolled. Dryden 60 is positioned north of Buller Lake, approximately eight kilometres east of Highway 105. The fire covers an area of 0.2 hectares and is being held. Dryden 61 can be found near Rafter Lake, about nine kilometres west of Highway 72. This small fire spans just 0.1 hectares and is under control. Thunder Bay 70 is within Wabakimi Park, about one kilometre west of Beagle Lake; this uncontrolled fire measures around 0.7 hectares. Nipigon 88 is located approximately 24 kilometres southwest of Sebert Lake with a size of about 0.3 hectares; it’s currently being monitored.

The provincial Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) agency stated that out of the active fires in the region, there are currently thirty that are not controlled, ten being held, five under control, and eighty-five are being observed.

Fires worth noting include the Rinker Lake Complex which encompasses Thunder Bay fires numbered thirty-six and fifty-four along with Dryden thirty-four and thirty-five.

AFFES has reported that an incident management team has taken over command for this cluster with fourteen wildland firefighters from Ontario and Alberta along with twenty firefighters from Mexico assigned to help.

This group has experienced increased activity over recent days; Thunder Bay thirty-six alone has grown to more than three hundred thirteen thousand hectares in size without containment.

The Atikokan Cluster includes Fort Frances fires fourteen, fifteen, and thirty-eight where teams from Mexico were deployed on Saturday to assist on the front lines while crews work from various spots along the perimeter aided by helicopters.

Other notable fires include:

Dryden thirty-six located at Upper and Lower Moosehide Lakes south of Ignace which has been held at around one thousand seven hundred hectares. The Highway five ninety-nine Cluster consists of Sioux Lookout eighty-four, eighty-six, and eighty-nine where no recent growth has been observed; currently one hundred eighteen personnel along with five helicopters have been assigned to manage this cluster. Sioux Lookout seventy-two – Cat Lake First Nation which now extends to about twenty-three thousand five hundred hectares remains uncontrolled but minimal behavior from the flames was noted; AFFES indicated that Sunday would be the final day this will be classified as a noteworthy fire.

Evacuations

Around one thousand eight hundred seventy-six individuals from northwestern Ontario continue to stay evacuated due to ongoing wildfires in their region as per a spokesperson for the province’s minister for emergency preparedness and response.

In total “fourteen communities have been evacuated while six have returned home.”

The ministry stated they’ve conducted over one hundred coordination calls with First Nation chiefs along with leaders from communities as well as emergency management partners including municipalities since they received their initial Request for Assistance on July fourteen according to Minister Jill Dunlop.

“The number of evacuees gets reported into the Provincial Emergency Operations Centre (PEOC) by community leadership. Evacuation numbers may fluctuate as community leaders confirm totals with our ministry,” wrote spokesperson Julia Facca on Wednesday.

“I wouldn’t ask you to leave your home or our land if it wasn’t absolutely necessary. But for your own safety-as well as that of our community members plus responders-please leave right away,” Chief Wilfred King announced in a notice posted within his community last Wednesday. Evacuation orders remain effective or alerts exist nearby these following fires: If you’re under evacuation orders you must vacate immediately whereas those receiving alerts should prepare themselves for possible evacuation ahead.
The Ministry of Natural Resources’ Thunder Bay-Ignace District implemented implementation orders concerning these particular fires: Dryden thirty-six: all travel plus use involving Berglund Road , Ila Road , Moosehide Road , Powerline Road will not be allowed unless authorized; access into Balmoral River , Bigwalk Lake , Elsie lake , Nora lake , Roberts lake , Turtle River alongside any Crown lands remains restricted.
