Update on the Forest Fires in Northwestern Ontario

As of the latest report from Friday night by Ontario’s Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES), there are 87 wildfires active in northwestern Ontario.

Out of these, 10 fires are not under control, six are being held, eight have been brought under control, and the rest are currently being monitored.

Two new fires were confirmed in the northwest region as of Friday evening:

Nipigon 99 (NIP099) is situated east of Pays Plat, about 3 kilometres northeast of Highway 17 and 5.5 kilometres north of Rossport. This fire covers an area of 0.1 hectares and is not under control. Nipigon 100 (NIP100) is located roughly 10.5 kilometres north of Highway 17 in Pays Plat and about 2 kilometres northeast of West Fox Lake. This fire is also a small one at 0.1 hectares and remains uncontrolled.

The forest fire risk is primarily low to moderate throughout most areas in northwestern Ontario; however, some parts-especially in the southwestern region including Thunder Bay and Kenora districts-are facing significant high hazards.

Significant Fires in the Area

The Rinker Complex: This includes Thunder Bay 36, Dryden 34, and Dryden 35 – it continues to be one of the largest firefighting efforts in this area. Thunder Bay 36 spans over 301,240 hectares; Dryden 34 covers about 45,800 hectares; while Dryden 35 is at around 30,201 hectares. All three fires are still not under control. An evacuation order is still active for regions affected by these fires. Fire activity has been minimal overall; nevertheless, dry conditions along with gusty winds on Thursday led to some heightened fire behavior late on Friday. Atikokan Cluster: This consists of Fort Frances fires numbered as 13,14, and15 measuring approximately at sizes: 25,279 hectares for Fort Frances 13; 51,768 hectares for Fort Frances 14; and 42,273 hectares for Fort Frances 15 respectively. Currently listed as observed is Fort Frances 13 while Fort Frances 14 and 15 continue to remain out of control but with restrictions now lifted for both those areas.
