There are currently 122 active wildfires in northwestern Ontario, as per the latest report from Ontario’s Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) released Sunday evening.
Among these fires, 26 are out of control, four are being held, four are under control, while the remainder are being monitored.
Six new fires were reported in the northwest by Sunday evening:
Kenora 24 (KEN024) was confirmed in the evening hours of July 25, close to Highway 17, northwest of Longbow Lake. The fire measures 0.2 hectares and has been called out. Fort Frances 49 (FOR049) was confirmed on July 25 in the evening on an island at Upper Manitou Lake. This fire spans 0.3 hectares and is not under control. Fort Frances 50 (FOR050) is situated near Highrock Lake, around 23 kilometres east of Highway 502. The fire covers an area of 0.1 hectares and has been called out. Fort Frances 51 (FOR051) was located near Harris Lake’s northwest side, about 25 kilometres west of Highway 502. The size is also at 0.1 hectares and remains out of control. Red Lake 25 (RED025) was found at Springpole Lake’s northwest end, east of Wagner Bay. This fire is also a small one at just 0.1 hectares and has been called out. Dryden 48 (DRY048) sits between Mc Intyre Bay and Manitou Narrows on Lac Seul. It’s another small fire covering an area of just about 0.1 hectares that is not under control.
The largest wildfire in the region, identified as Thunder Bay 36, continues to be out of control at nearly 314,000 hectares in size. A NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) is currently active for this area.
“Additional crews arrived on the fire line from Alberta Wildfire on July 25,” AFFES mentioned Sunday evening. “Fire crews continue their efforts to locate and put out hot spots along the perimeter with support from helicopter bucketing operations.”
“Heavy equipment operators are making good progress constructing fire guards. Values protection efforts are ongoing,” it added.
Evacuation Orders and Alerts
Evacuation orders or alerts remain active for areas surrounding these fires:
If you’re under evacuation orders you must leave immediately; those under evacuation alerts should prepare to evacuate.
The Ministry of Natural Resources’ Thunder Bay-Ignace District has put implementation orders into effect near these fires:
Dryden fires numbered 34, 35 and 36. Fort Frances fire number 14. Thunder Bay fires numbered 36, 54 and 56.
Implementation orders restrict people’s movement around these areas.
A restricted fire zone continues across northwestern Ontario along with a small part of northeastern Ontario; therefore no open-air burning-including campfires-is allowed.
The forest fire danger rating varies from low to moderate across most parts of northwestern Ontario but there are some high hazard spots near Kenora, Dryden, Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug, Bearskin Lake First Nation and Marten Falls.
Highway Closures Currently Active
The province’s interactive highway map indicates that several roads remain closed due to wildfire activity:
All lanes on Lac des Mille Lacs Road are closed both ways from Inwood Road to Highway 17. Highway 811 remains closed except for local traffic evacuating. Hwy 527 is closed in both directions between Tertiary Hwy 811 and Armstrong.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) urges everyone for their own safety-and that of emergency responders-to:
Stay clear from affected zones and avoid going to wildfire scenes for photos or videos. Remain calm while following all evacuation orders and instructions given by local authorities. Avoid unnecessary travel in affected regions. Keep up-to-date with official sources for current information regarding evacuations. Stay away from evacuated places until authorities say it’s safe again. Help keep roads clear so emergency personnel can perform their duties effectively. If you need to evacuate make sure you take essential medications, identification documents, important papers, mobile devices with chargers as well as any necessary items for family members or pets.
