The wildfire situation in northwestern Ontario is worsening again, with several new fires reported overnight.

Late Sunday, nine new wildfires were confirmed, bringing the total number of active fires in the area to 61. Fire officials report that 36 of these fires are currently out of control.

Most of the wildfire activity is happening north of Kenora, Dryden, and Thunder Bay, especially around the Red Lake and Sioux Lookout regions – areas that have experienced repeated flare-ups recently.

Even with the rise in active fires, the Ontario Forest Fire Info Map indicates that the overall risk for new wildfires is now deemed low. This comes as a recent heat wave begins to move eastward, leading to slightly less favorable conditions for new fire ignition.

Crews are continuing to monitor the situation closely while suppression efforts remain active throughout the region.
