A 17-year-old driver from Central Elgin has been charged in connection with the death of a St. Thomas teenager, five months after a crash involving a truck and a car, according to Ontario Provincial Police.
The accident took place just before 1 p. m. on Friday, Nov. 14, at the intersection of Quaker Road and Southdale Line, east of St. Thomas.
One passenger in the car was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, while the driver sustained injuries that were not life-threatening, police reported. The truck driver remained unharmed.
Friends and family have identified the young woman who lost her life as Hadley Denison, a Grade 12 student at Parkside Collegiate Institute in St. Thomas.
On Nov. 17, her mother, Heather Denison, shared with The Free Press that Hadley had been declared brain dead.
On Tuesday afternoon, OPP announced that the sedan’s driver, also 17 and from Central Elgin, had been charged under the Highway Traffic Act with careless driving causing death.
The youth’s identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Prior to her mother’s update, a Go Fund Me campaign created to support the family described Hadley as being in critical condition at London Health Sciences Centre’s Children’s Hospital. The funds raised were intended to help support her parents during this difficult time following the collision.
The campaign referred to Denison as “a fierce and loving daughter,” an excellent student and a caring sister whose situation has been “heartbreaking for everyone who loves her.”
