Dry Weather in Ontario: Will Rain Return Soon?

Many communities across southern Ontario are currently experiencing their longest dry spell of 2026.

This rain-free period is expected to last a bit longer, possibly matching or exceeding the 16 straight dry days Toronto had in 2025.

However, signs of change may be on the way as Hurricane Polo moves inland by the end of next week.

A Few Weeks Without Any Measurable Rain

For most of September, conditions have offered a welcome break for southern Ontario after a wet, stormy summer.

Stable high-pressure systems over the Great Lakes have kept rain at bay; in fact, southern Ontario hasn’t seen any rain since Sept. 16. The last similar dry streak dates back to the end of May.

Typically, September brings about 69 mm of rain at Toronto-Pearson Airport. This month has only recorded 48.1 mm, with nearly all of it falling during severe thunderstorms on Sept. 2.

Such extended dry spells aren’t too uncommon this time of year. Last September saw 16 dry days, and there were even 21 consecutive dry days in September 2017.

Why do these calmer stretches often happen in September? It’s that transition month where summer tries to linger while autumn pushes forward. High-pressure systems often dominate the Great Lakes during this time, leading to clear skies and sunny weather.

The forecast looks bright and dry for the rest of this weekend and into the final days of September, ensuring that this region will continue its stretch without rain.
