GM Invests $691 Million in St. Catharines Plant

General Motors has announced it will invest $691 million into its St. Catharines Propulsion Plant to enhance production of its new V-8 engines for full-sized trucks and SUVs.

The company states that these upgrades will make St. Catharines the third facility to manufacture the sixth generation of this engine, joining operations in Buffalo, N. Y., and Flint, Mich.

The investment comes at a time when tariffs set by the U. S. government have raised concerns about the future of Canada’s automotive industry.

GM Canada president Jack Uppal mentioned in a press release that this investment solidifies St. Catharines’ role in one of its core vehicle programs for years ahead.

The automaker has also been putting money into its Oshawa, Ont., plant which produces pickup trucks, though it’s worth noting that they switched from three shifts to two at the end of January.

GM’s CAMI assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ont., is currently inactive after halting production of its electric delivery van last year.
