NEWS RELEASE
SIMCOE COUNTY GREENBELT COALITION
************************
This week, the Simcoe County Greenbelt Coalition (SCGC) received the Watershed Guardian of the Year Award from the Ontario Headwaters Institute.

We’re proud to accept this award because it honors the teamwork of our 50 member groups, allied organizations and residents throughout the region who are genuinely concerned about our water’s future.

With municipal elections coming up on October 26, candidates in your area are seeking your vote. The concern raised by SCGC and the Ontario Headwaters Institute is whether we have all necessary evidence to make sustainable decisions that support people, places, and prosperity together. That’s why we’ve asked over 300 candidates in the region to pledge to be Community Leaders for a Sustainable Simcoe. This pledge is a public commitment to making transparent choices that encompass water security, local economies, food production, and community health.

So why should you care about water security?

Because chances are someone you know-a friend, family member or local business-depends on groundwater. In fact, around 90% of municipalities in this region rely on groundwater to some extent. Most of us likely agree that we want clean and abundant water from our taps and wells.

The Ontario Headwaters Institute has expressed concerns regarding gaps in watershed management across Ontario and is calling for more careful consideration of municipal decisions affecting our water supply. They’ve also identified Simcoe County as one of six regions where watersheds face risks due to heavy reliance on groundwater along with limited understanding of how these systems function.

Think about it like managing a household budget. You wouldn’t make significant financial choices without knowing how much money you have or how much you spend versus what comes in. Yet we still have crucial questions regarding how much groundwater exists, how quickly we’re using it up, and how fast those supplies are being replenished. It seems reasonable to expect governments to understand our water resources just as carefully as households keep track of their bank accounts.

Finding ways to earn more money can be tough. However, finding ways to generate more clean water 300 feet underground is impossible.

We need municipal leaders who will demand complete evidence, consider every detail, and plan for all costs involved.

We’ll need municipalities, residents and community organizations collaborating together to advocate for both provincial and federal investment necessary to enhance scientific research and monitoring behind those decisions so we aren’t endangering our water supply.

So before casting your vote in October, engage with your candidates about their positions. What commitments have they made publicly? How do those promises impact your access to water?
