Sarnia’s suspended police chief is currently under investigation following a complaint made by a local business owner and former city councillor.
The complaint was forwarded to York Regional Police, an external police agency, because it “reasonably believes the alleged events may constitute a criminal offence.”
A representative from York Regional Police confirmed that it’s an active and ongoing criminal investigation but did not share any further details.
This investigation began after Nathan Colquhoun submitted a complaint earlier this year, which includes allegations about Chief Derek Davis’ hiring practices and private consulting interests.
“It concerned the conduct of Chief Derek Davis,” wrote Nathan Colquhoun to in an email.
Colquhoun, who owns The Sarnia Journal and writes for it as well, mentioned that his complaint also claims Davis misused public resources when sending libel notices to The Journal.
Earlier this year, Davis filed and then withdrew a $1.5 million defamation lawsuit against Colquhoun and his media company.
Davis has been on paid suspension since May while an external law firm looks into allegations of workplace harassment.
has been unable to contact Davis for comments.
Kelly Ash, chair of the Sarnia Police Services Board, stated in a social media post last week that she understands the frustration many people are feeling.
“Unfortunately, I am unable to comment on or provide further information regarding the criminal aspect of the matter,” wrote Ash in an e-mail to .
has requested Colquhoun for a copy of the complaint along with supporting documents.
While Davis is suspended, Toronto’s former Deputy Police Chief Mike Federico is acting as interim chief for the Sarnia police service.
