A portion of Highway 402 was shut down Wednesday because of dangerous road conditions.

Shortly after 4:30 p. m., Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrived at the scene after receiving reports about unsafe conditions on the westbound stretch in Plympton-Wyoming.

Consequently, Highway 402 westbound is closed between Oil Heritage Road and Mandaumin Road.

Drivers are advised to exit at Oil Heritage Road and take London Line to Mandaumin Road to get back onto the highway.

In the meantime, travelers are encouraged to find alternative routes and allow extra time for their journeys.

This closure comes as Sarnia-Lambton deals with a prolonged heat wave, with daytime temperatures ranging from 31 to 35 degrees Celsius, and humidex readings near the low 40s.

According to Environment Canada, temperatures reached 34 C around 4 p. m. on Wednesday, with humidex values hovering around 46.

Last year, extreme heat caused closures along the highway due to ongoing concrete issues.

The OPP indicated that this current road closure will likely remain in effect for a significant time as crews work on safely repairing the roadway surface.

Updates will be shared as more information becomes available.

Lambton OPP appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation during this closure.
