Parts of southwestern Ontario could experience some intense weather on Friday night.

Environment Canada has put out a yellow severe thunderstorm watch for Chatham-Kent, southern Wellington County, Sarnia-Lambton, and Windsor-Essex.

The weather agency is monitoring a line of thunderstorms moving through Michigan.

At 6:15 p. m., the yellow watch was upgraded to a yellow severe thunderstorm warning for Windsor-Essex. Soon after, it escalated to an orange warning, which expired at 8 p. m.

Chatham-Kent joined the orange warning around 6:45 p. m. About 40 minutes later, Environment Canada issued a tornado warning for Chatham-Kent as conditions were ripe for producing a tornado.

A yellow severe thunderstorm warning was released for Sarnia-Lambton shortly after 7:30 p. m.

This system could bring heavy rain, wind gusts up to 120 kilometres per hour, and hail the size of ping-pong balls.

“Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms capable of producing damaging hail, wind or rain,” read the notice from Environment Canada.
