Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) made numerous traffic stops on the roads over the August long weekend.
Officers in the West Region conducted 2,107 traffic stops and issued 1,815 charges during the Civic Holiday enforcement campaign. The majority of these charges were related to speeding.
From July 31 to August 3, police concentrated on key driving behaviors that lead to fatalities, injuries, and property damage on Ontario’s roads. This includes speeding, not wearing seatbelts, distracted driving, and impaired driving.
Essex County recorded the highest number of traffic violations overall. The only exception was for drivers who did not move over for emergency vehicles; Essex had three such charges while Middlesex County reported five.

According to law enforcement officials, speed-related accidents have resulted in 14 fatalities on OPP-patrolled roads in Ontario’s West Region this year.
