Wellington OPP have confirmed that five people lost their lives in a two-vehicle crash in Mapleton Township on Friday night.

Emergency services responded to the scene at the intersection of Wellington Road 12 and 4th Line, close to Conestogo Lake Conservation Area, around 7:30 p. m.

Police report that a van with 10 passengers collided with an SUV that had only one occupant at the intersection.

This tragic incident resulted in the deaths of five children aged four to twelve. OPP state that four adults, one infant, and the driver of the SUV sustained serious injuries.

Three individuals were airlifted to trauma centers due to their severe injuries, while several others were taken to nearby hospitals.

The OPP Traffic Incident Management Enforcement team was present at the site and is assisting with the ongoing investigation.

Consequently, the intersection of 4th Line and Wellington Road 12 remained closed until approximately 4 p. m. on Saturday.

If anyone witnessed the collision or has information, such as dashcam footage, that could help this ongoing investigation, they are urged to contact the Wellington County OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
