Two individuals from the Ottawa Valley were taken into custody after a significant drug seizure that officials described as “dangerous.”

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported that a collaborative investigation with the Canada Border Services Agency resulted in the recovery of a substantial quantity of ketamine.

The “powerful” drug is utilized as an anesthetic in both human and veterinary medicine. It blocks pain and can impair cognitive and physical functions, leaving individuals confused, fatigued, and unable to stand, according to a fact sheet from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.

On Feb. 24, border officers discovered ketamine while inspecting a shipment at the International Mail Processing Centre located in the Greater Toronto Area. They contacted OPP after finding 6 kilograms of the substance in the package. Acting on information provided by border services, police carried out a search warrant at a residence on Maloney Road in Renfrew, Ont.

At this location, authorities arrested two people and confiscated ketamine along with six grams of suspected cocaine and some suspected methamphetamine. Other items linked to drug trafficking, $1,300 in cash, and a collapsible baton were also seized by police.

Amal Nahas, 35, and Lindsay Thompson, 47, both residents of Renfrew are facing charges of:

Possession of Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – three counts Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000 Unauthorized possession of a weapon

Nahas is also charged with importing a Schedule 1 substance.

Both individuals have been released and are scheduled to appear before court in Pembroke.
