What started on Saturday afternoon as reports of a serious car crash in Port Elgin and a strong police presence south of town has now been connected to a deadly police-involved shooting that is currently being investigated by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit.

In a statement released Sunday, Ontario Provincial Police said members of the South Bruce Detachment tried to arrest an individual at around 5:50 p. m. on February 21.

The individual was said to have been involved in several incidents earlier that day across South Bruce and Huron County.

According to the announcement, officers from the OPP Emergency Response Team and Canine Unit found the individual at a home on the Bruce-Saugeen Townline in Kincardine. During their interaction, police fired their weapon. The individual was declared dead at the scene.

No further details about what led up to the shooting have been provided.

The police activity first became known at 4:44 p. m. Saturday when OPP West Region announced a full closure of Bruce-Saugeen Townline between Side Road 10 and J & I Side Road due to a heavy police presence, urging drivers to stay away from the area.

Soon after, Saugeen Shores Police shared this advisory again and added another location – the intersection of Goderich Street and Gustavus Street in Port Elgin – advising motorists to avoid that area too. At that time, authorities stated there was no threat to public safety.

By early evening, Saugeen Shores Police confirmed they were addressing a “serious motor vehicle collision” at Goderich and Gustavus, describing it as a joint investigation with Ontario Provincial Police. No information was given regarding injuries or how many vehicles were involved or if anyone had been arrested.

As of 6:00 p. m., the intersection at Goderich and Gustavus had reopened. At 7:30 p. m., OPP reiterated there was no ongoing danger to public safety. However, Bruce-Saugeen Townline remained closed throughout the night.

Since the Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate, OPP stated they will not share any more information. The SIU is an independent civilian agency that investigates incidents involving police where there has been death, serious injury, or claims of sexual assault.

The identity of the deceased person has not yet been released or confirmed by authorities.

Owen Sound Current has sent questions to the SIU and will provide updates as more information comes in.
