A large-scale search is still underway Friday in the Renfrew area following a “serious assault” that took place on a woman Thursday.

Provincial police reported that the situation began when a woman arrived at a local hospital, claiming she had been held against her will and sexually assaulted at a motel on Stewart Street.

The victim stated that she was familiar with the suspect and mentioned he was armed with a handgun.

The man was later seen walking in the vicinity.

Officers tried to apprehend him, but he ran onto the Algonquin Trail.

Although police believed there was no immediate danger to the public, they issued a shelter-in-place advisory just after 9 p. m. “out of an abundance of caution.”

This advisory was lifted shortly before 1 a. m. Friday morning when it seemed that the suspect had escaped from the area.

Authorities have identified the suspect and are seeking an arrest warrant.

His name has not been released yet.

Police described him as Black, between five feet nine to six feet (175-183 cm) tall, with hair on top and shaved sides. He has a goatee along with a five-star tattoo above his left eyebrow and another tattoo beneath his left eye.

He was last seen wearing a purple plaid jacket, possibly black shorts, and a blue shirt.

Anyone who sees this individual or notices any suspicious activity should call 911 right away. Do not approach him.

Police urged the man to reach out to the Renfrew OPP to surrender himself.Anyone with information or relevant doorbell, dashcam or surveillance footage is encouraged to contact the Renfrew OPP at 1-888-310-1122 and mention incident E251166365.If you wish to remain anonymous but have information, please reach out to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or visit ontariocrimestoppers. caRelated
