It’s going to feel like it’s -30 with wind chill values making the temperatures really cold in Waterloo Region.

A yellow cold weather warning was issued by Environment Canada on Monday, indicating that a wind chill of -25 to -30 is likely overnight into Tuesday. The weather authority cautions that severe cold poses risks to everyone.

“Wind chill values will moderate through the day Tuesday, but are still expected to be -15 to -20,” it warns.

Frostbite can happen within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill, it notes. Those most vulnerable to cold-related illnesses include young children, older adults, and individuals outside without proper shelter.

Allister Aalders, 570’s Meteorologist, mentioned that temperatures won’t get back to the seasonal averages of -3 C until the first week of February.

“Highs near -10 C, -11 C Monday and Tuesday, and then -13 C, -14 C for the middle and later parts of the week,” added Aalders. “Waking up Friday could see temperatures in the mid-minus-twenties once again.”

This comes as the region continues recovering from a large and strong low-pressure system that moved across the Great Lakes, affecting most of southern Ontario.
