If you’re looking for a beach getaway with soft sand, clear water, and a friendly small-town vibe, you should check out this lakeside town in Ontario.

With six stunning beaches and charming streets, it’s a summer haven, and Narcity readers claim it has the softest sand in the province.

Situated along the shores of Lake Huron, Port Elgin is an idyllic beach town located just under three hours from Toronto.

The destination is described as “one of Ontario’s best kept vacation secrets” on its tourism website due to its lovely downtown area, natural beauty, and laid-back waterfront feel.

The shoreline is one of the town’s main attractions. Port Elgin features six white-sand beaches, each providing its own unique way to enjoy the lake-whether you want to swim, sunbathe, walk along the shore, or simply relax with a view.

If you prefer a more peaceful beach day, Gobles Grove is known for offering “peace and quiet and less activity.” The calm waters are shallow here, making it perfect for a soothing swim.

Other great spots to visit include Eidts Grove Beach, Shipley Beach, and Miramichi Bay where you’ll find even more stretches of shoreline to chill out on.

If you’re in the mood for something other than sand, Port Elgin is also called “Ontario’s hiking heaven,” boasting scenic trails for walking and cycling around the area.

For additional nature adventures nearby, take a short drive to Mac Gregor Point Provincial Park where you can explore tranquil trails, spot local wildlife, and enjoy quiet beaches away from crowds.

No summer trip to Port Elgin would be complete without staying for sunset. The area is famous for having “some of the most spectacular sunsets in all of Ontario,” with colorful skies lighting up over Lake Huron.

After your day at the beach, wander through downtown to check out local shops or grab a meal on an outdoor patio. Don’t forget to treat yourself to some ice cream before heading back to the water!

Port Elgin is also near Southampton-a delightful lakeside community featuring sandy beaches and beautiful waterfront views-making it easy to visit both towns during your weekend getaway.

For a fun way to see the coastline from Southampton, hop on the Chantry Island boat tour. This historic lighthouse island hosts one of Canada’s last remaining Imperial Towers. The boat ride gives you stunning views of Lake Huron along the way.

With its soft sandy shores, small-town charm, and endless vistas over Lake Huron, Port Elgin feels like a hidden gem waiting for summer adventures.
