Canadian diplomats stationed in the U. S. have been instructed to steer clear of candidates involved in the midterm elections, aiming to maintain a low profile and avoid accusations of political meddling from the Trump administration, sources familiar with the situation revealed.
According to written guidance shared on Tuesday, Canadian officials are prohibited from engaging with or even being present with midterm candidates – which includes all House candidates and a third of the Senate – unless they receive explicit permission.
However, Canadian officials can still hold other meetings and conduct business with elected U. S. representatives who aren’t facing reelection if it’s necessary. They’ve been reminded to avoid appearing in photographs alongside any elected U. S. officials, based on insights from individuals who spoke anonymously regarding the internal memo that labeled these actions as a “very risk-averse approach.”
