Shoppers in Listowel and Port Elgin can now pick up beer or wine while they grocery shop.
Zehrs in Listowel and Rowland’s Your Independent Grocer in Port Elgin will start selling wine and beer on Friday.
These stores are part of 20 new locations across Ontario announced by Loblaw Companies Limited.
The selected Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstore, Zehrs, Your Independent Grocer, Fortinos, and No Frills locations join the original 19 stores that were already licensed to sell beer and cider.
In the next few months, these stores will offer over 400 types of wine, 200 beers, and 25 ciders, including local favorites as well as international options.
At the same time, Warren Thomas, President of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, is calling out the premier and the grocery store lobby as “villains.” Thomas was responding to today’s news about 20 more grocery stores under Loblaw Companies starting to sell wine and beer.
In a news release, Thomas says this move is another step towards privatizing the Liquor Control Board of Ontario. He claims the grocery store lobby is “hungry for profit,” while the premier is trying to save her political position.
As of today, a total of 67 grocery stores now have wine, beer, and cider available on their shelves.
