Beverly Sue “Susie” Baxter, 70, of Canadian, passed away on March 31, 2026, with her beloved husband by her side.
Funeral Services will take place at 10 am on Saturday, April 4, at the Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Canadian Chapel, officiated by Gary Jahnel. Burial will follow at Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Canadian.
Public viewing is scheduled for Thursday, April 2, from 12-8 pm and Friday, April 3, from 9 am-8 pm at Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Canadian.
Susie was born on April 2, 1955, in Pampa. During high school, she was part of a Vocal Trio that won the State competition. Susie also starred as Mary Poppins in a theater production. She moved to Canadian from Kermit in 1974 and met Shaffer Baxter soon after. They were married on June 25, 1976. Susie studied at Frank Phillips College where she earned her Vocational Nursing License. She cared for newborns in both the old and new hospitals and completed training with H&R Block. Before marrying Shaffer, Susie ran the Donut Shop alongside her grandparents Roger and Addie Batts.
From the start, Susie and Shaffer made a great team; they did everything together. They operated the Baxter Tire Shop and later opened Sweet Temptations and Grill. They loved serving their community with smiles and great service. Susie became the first woman volunteer for the Canadian Volunteer Fire Department. Eventually, she worked for Canadian ISD in transportation as a bus driver and secretary before retiring after 19 years. Her hobbies included sewing, reading, loving children and caring for her family.
Susie was preceded in death by her parents Ralph and Velma Hornberger; her brother Dawayne Meeckum; and brothers-in-law David Bennett, Jerry Martin, and Jim Martin.
She is survived by her husband Shaffer Baxter; children Heather Baxter and Shawn Baxter; sisters Vicki Cain (husband David) and Linda Bennett; nieces and nephews Tina, Jeremy, Brandie, Brian, Shelby, Jason, Janie, Heather and Amber; along with brother-in-law Larry Martin (wife Norma).
