The Bluewater District School Board is reaching out to the community for feedback on the design of a new school in Port Elgin.

The board received approval for funding from the Ministry of Education to help create a new elementary school under the 2024-2025 Capital Priorities Grant program. The ministry has pledged over $17.8 million to build this new-growth school in Port Elgin.

<p. Working with community and municipal partners, board staff noted the increasing demand for student spaces in Saugeen Shores and submitted a proposal for an additional school.

This new facility will accommodate an extra 409 students from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 6 and will work alongside Northport Elementary School and Port Elgin-Saugeen Central School.

The upcoming elementary school in Port Elgin will be based on a revised version of the Beavercrest Community School design found in Markdale, including a second floor as stated by the board.

“This approach will allow the project team to retain proven base design elements while making targeted adjustments to better meet the specific needs of students and staff,” the board said in an online notice.

In 2025, the board chose a three-hectare site located at the final phase of the Summerside subdivision, west of Highway 21 on Concession 10 at a future extension of Waterloo St., as where they plan to build this new school.

Students, staff, families, and others within the community are encouraged to visit the board’s website to see preliminary floor plans and renderings for this two-story Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6 school in Port Elgin.

A special email address, pesdesignreview@bwdsb. on. ca, has been set up to collect public input and inquiries about this project until May 22. Answers to frequently asked questions will be shared on their web page when needed, according to what was mentioned by the board.
