PICKERING, ONT. – The Ontario government has revealed plans to invest $19.5 million to set up a new Centre for Fusion Energy, aimed at boosting energy research and commercialization.
As stated in a release, the centre will also promote fresh academic and industry collaborations, offer new hands-on learning experiences, and drive economic and research activities throughout the province.
This initiative is being developed alongside the federal government, Stellarex Group Limited, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), and Ontario Power Generation (OPG).
The federal government is contributing $33 million through AECL while Stellarex aims to provide up to $39 million for the center. Ontario has signed a memorandum of understanding with OPG, which will manage all project details on behalf of the province.
This project builds on an earlier MOU between OPG, Stellarex, AECL, and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories to explore setting up a Centre for Fusion Energy in Ontario and continue fostering a competitive domestic fusion ecosystem, according to the release.
