A 14-year-old boy from Pickering is facing a first-degree murder charge after an elderly woman was fatally stabbed in the city on Thursday, according to Durham police.
The young suspect appeared via Zoom in Oshawa court on Friday from Durham Regional Police Division 17. During the hearing, he confirmed that he had spoken with a lawyer and understood the charges against him.
His identity is shielded under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. He is set to appear in court again on June 20.
Police had initially stated that the accused was 13 years old but updated his age on Friday morning.
Acting Staff Sgt. Joanne Mc Cabe did not disclose details about what led to the arrest, noting that this information is part of an ongoing investigation.
She said Friday that the homicide unit will look into any motives for this incident. Authorities also haven’t confirmed whether a weapon was found at the scene.

“This seems to be a random attack, and we have no connection between the victim and the male in custody,” Mc Cabe stated.
She added that police are withholding the name and age of the victim at her family’s request.

According to police, Thursday’s attack involved a male who approached a woman he didn’t know outside her home. There was a “brief conversation” before she was allegedly stabbed, Mc Cabe said.
Durham police Chief Peter Moreira remarked that the suspect’s actions were “in a sadistic and cowardly unprovoked attack that was captured on video,” while speaking with reporters Thursday night.
Mc Cabe expressed gratitude toward community members who came forward to assist the victim.
“We appreciate their efforts. The family appreciates their efforts,” she noted.
Ontario Provincial Police issued an emergency alert around 5:40 p. m., acting on behalf of Durham police regarding an investigation into a homicide suspect near Lynn Heights Drive and advising residents to stay indoors.
In response to this alert, all public facilities in Pickering were closed, including community centers and libraries.
Pickering Mayor Kevin Asheexplained that these measures were taken “out of an abundance of caution until there was an arrest made.”“Thankfully that was done quickly,” he told CBC Radio’s Metro Morning earlier Friday.
