Three individuals have lost their lives and two others are hospitalized with critical injuries after a crash involving two SUVs in Pickering.

Officers from the Ontario Provincial Police’s (OPP) Toronto detachment, along with other emergency responders, were dispatched to a section of Highway 7 near Concession Road 6 at about 7 p. m. on Tuesday.

According to OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, a westbound SUV veered into the eastbound lanes and struck another SUV that was heading east on the highway.

An 82-year-old woman from Port Perry, Ont., who was the only occupant of the eastbound vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two out of four passengers in the westbound SUV were also declared dead at the scene: a 63-year-old woman from Markham and a 68-year-old woman from Scarborough, both of whom were seated in the back seat.

The driver of the westbound vehicle, a 64-year-old man from Markham, sustained critical injuries during the incident, along with another passenger, a 70-year-old man from Richmond Hill who was sitting in the front seat.

The exact reasons behind this tragic crash remain unclear.

“At this time we do not believe weather or environmental factors or mechanical issues contributed to this crash. There is no indication of alcohol at this time. The investigation is still ongoing,” Schmidt said.

Police suspect that all occupants were wearing their seatbelts when the accident occurred.
