TORONTO – Authorities report that one person has died following a fire on Sunday evening at an apartment within a community housing building in Toronto.

Toronto Fire Services indicate that crews were dispatched to a highrise near Yonge and Gerrard streets just before 10 p. m.

Fire Chief Jim Jessop stated that firefighters entered the building and had to force their way into an eighth-floor unit where “they were met with heavy smoke and heat.”

Jessop mentioned that crews discovered an individual in the unit who was without vital signs and managed to bring that person out.

He noted that emergency teams attempted life-saving measures, but the individual was pronounced dead.

Fire officials have confirmed that investigators are present at the site and will collaborate with the Ontario Fire Marshal to ascertain the cause, origin, and circumstances surrounding the fire.

This report by The Canadian Press was first May 11, 2026.
