In 2025, the City of Peterborough finished several important infrastructure projects. These included the reconstruction of Brealey Drive, enhancements to the intersections at George and Hilliard streets, and improved lighting along the Rotary Greenway Trail link.

In East City, work was completed on a new signalized crossing along with upgrades to sidewalks and pavement on the Rotary Greenway Trail where it intersects Hunter Street, making it easier for people to access.

The city also resurfaced 3.6 kilometers of roads in downtown.

Looking forward, there are many significant capital projects and infrastructure plans scheduled to start or wrap up in 2026. Overall, the city’s budget for 2026 covers 156 projects totaling $140.5 million. In addition, there’s $95.9 million already set aside for capital expenditures from 2026-29, with $53.6 million earmarked for 2026.

Here’s a look at the top 20 capital projects planned for the City of Peterborough in 2026 along with their estimated costs based on the city budget.

1. Renovation and Expansion of Peterborough Police Station

Total commitment for 2026: $23.5 million ($12 million in 2027, $23.4 million in 2028)

Renovations are already taking place at both locations: 1421 Lansdowne St. W., as well as at the current headquarters located at 500 Water St. These updates include energy-efficient improvements as part of a multi-phase project addressing long-term space needs for the police service.

“This investment ensures that the Peterborough Police Service has safe, modern and functional facilities to support effective policing and meet the needs of a growing community now and into the future,” a statement from the city explains regarding this expansion project.

The funding comes from development charges combined with “other city resources,” and money has been allocated for three years ahead.

2. Lansdowne Street West – From Spillsbury Drive to Clonsilla Avenue

Total commitment for 2026: $9.1 million (pre-committed in 2024), plus an additional $2.9 pre-committed for 2027

This significant project aims to modernize Lansdowne Street West while enhancing traffic flow, safety, and active transportation options according to its short-term priority status within the city’s transportation master plan.

The plan features building a center turn lane, upgrading intersections at Spillsbury Drive/Kawartha Heights Boulevard and Clonsilla Avenue, adding a new signalized mid-block crossing along with new multi-use trails on both sides of this road to promote walking and cycling.

“The project will be implemented in phases; Phase One-which includes improvements at Clonsilla Avenue intersection-was completed back in 2023 while Phase Two involves property acquisition and utility relocations ongoing through both years.” The final phase is set to kick off in late 2026,” reads an official statement from city officials.

3. Effluent Disinfection Revitalization and Expansion

Total commitment for 2026: $7 million ($3 million pre-committed for 2027)

This year sees plans by Peterborough aimed at upgrading its wastewater treatment facility ensuring continued compliance with provincial standards alongside high-quality treatment processes currently relying on systems established since early ’90s.

“As these systems age maintenance requirements become more difficult leading us towards reviewing various disinfection technologies that can best cater our existing needs going forward,” states an announcement made by municipal authorities outlining their plans further detail about process reviews currently underway expected lasting until around the end-year period stretching across through until ’29).</pf<p
