This funding will support local seniors in staying fit, active, healthy, and socially connected within their communities.

The Government of Ontario is putting forth a total of $113,476 in annual funding to back two local Seniors Active Living Centres through the Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility.

For 2026-27, these local Seniors Active Living Centres will receive financial support:

· Cobourg Seniors Activity Centre is set to get $55,880. This center, located in Cobourg, serves about 1,000 older adults and seniors from Cobourg and the surrounding Northumberland area each year. The programs offered include social activities, gentle and high-intensity exercise classes, creative expression sessions, and pickleball.

· Ruth Clarke Activity Centre will be awarded $57,596. Situated at the Town Park Recreation Centre in Port Hope, this center caters to nearly 700 older adults and seniors. Its offerings include recreation activities, arts and culture programs, fitness options, card games, educational workshops and clinics, dining opportunities, social events, and transportation services.

“Programs like these play an important role in helping seniors stay active, build friendships and remain connected to their communities,” said David Piccini, MPP for Northumberland-Peterborough South.

“Our seniors deserve opportunities to stay engaged, maintain their independence and enjoy a high quality of life close to home. I’m proud that our government is continuing to invest in these valuable programs across Northumberland-Peterborough South.”

This year alone, Ontario is making a historic investment of nearly $23 million to support 416 Seniors Active Living Centre (SALC) programs across the province-including 97 new ones.

“Senior Active Living Centres keep our seniors fit, active healthy , socially connected , close to their homes , and in their communities,” stated Raymond Cho , Minister for Seniors and Accessibility. “Thanks to Premier Ford’s leadership our government is making the largest investment in Seniors Active Living Centre programs in Ontario’s history. This ? will help even more seniors , no matter where they live , including those in a city or rural remote areas as well as northern communities lead healthier , happier , and more independent lives.”

This year also marks the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the first six Elderly Persons’ Centres-now referred to as Seniors Active Living Centre programs-under the Elderly Persons’ Centres Act from 1966.

That’s sixty years of providing access to programs that assist more seniors in staying active , healthy , and socially engaged which ultimately enhances their overall well-being.

The Ontario government remains committed to supporting seniors by promoting social connections while keeping them engaged within their communities close to home-leading towards a happier life with better quality living standards.
