The early bird truly catches the worm, as Michael Eamon, the first candidate to submit his nomination papers in Peterborough, Ont., was elected mayor on Monday night.

Eamon announced his candidacy for mayor on May 1. He was followed by six other candidates after Mayor Jeff Leal decided not to run for re-election this summer.

After all seven polling locations reported their results, Eamon garnered 10,867 votes, which accounted for 36.5 percent of the total 29,773 votes cast.

He significantly outpaced runner-up Neil Morton, who secured 7,372 votes (24.8 percent), and long-serving city councillor Keith Riel with 5,990 votes (20.1 percent).

In a statement following his victory, Eamon praised the other candidates for their contributions during a “long,” six-month campaign and recognized their commitment and hard work.

“You brought many good ideas to the table. And you made it abundantly clear how much you care for this community,” said Eamon. “I hope you will continue to use your skills for the betterment of our city.”

Eamon specifically acknowledged Riel for his remarkable tenure of 16 years as a councillor representing Ward 4 (Ashburnham).

The soon-to-be mayor also congratulated all those who were elected to council.

“Enjoy your well-earned victories. We have a lot of work ahead of us,” he said. “I’m looking forward to working with each and every one of you. I look forward to meeting with you in the coming weeks to learn about your priorities so we can hit the ground running after the inauguration. And to everyone who ran – Thank you! We can’t have a democracy without caring committed people who come forward every four years to offer their skills and their service to make the city better.”
