Upcoming Mayoral Elections in Peterborough County

Five out of the eight townships in Peterborough County are set to hold mayoral elections on Oct. 26.

In three townships, there is a single candidate running for mayor without opposition.

Four candidates are competing for mayor – the current mayor is seeking re-election

Mayor Matthew Graham is aiming for a second term (he served as deputy mayor from 2018-2022 and then became mayor from 2022-2026).

The other candidates are Julia Herrick, Jaccob Burnett, and Jim Chaplin.

Chaplin was part of the township council for eight years, from 2007 to 2014. He ran for mayor twice – in 2014 and again in 2018 – but lost both times to former mayor Scott Mc Fadden.

Chaplin mentioned he was encouraged by friends and supporters to run at the last moment, officially filing his nomination on Aug. 21, which was the deadline.

“I don’t have a personal agenda. If I win, I’ll do the job for four years,” he said. “And if I don’t, well, it’s not the end of the world.”

Herrick is a master electrician who teaches at trade colleges. She expressed a strong desire to be mayor.

“I’m extraordinarily passionate about this,” she said. “I have the ability to do this (be mayor), and I would do it extraordinarily well. Choosing not to seems like a waste.”

As an electrician and single mother of three, Herrick believes her perspective on politics is unique.

“I’m coming at this from boots-on-the-ground, working class, single mom, average Joe type way,” she explained. “So I think most people – especially in Cavan Monaghan – view it similarly. We’re not part of the one percent.”

Jaccob Burnett has taken time off work as an OPP constable to focus on his campaign for mayor. He also brings with him 14 years of experience running an antiques business.

He shared that his family has lived in Millbrook for three generations.

The upcoming decade will see significant development in Millbrook according to Burnett, who emphasized that an “accountable government” will be essential during this time.

“I think it’s important to focus on the heritage of Millbrook and appreciate where we are-where we came from-and where we stand today-especially giving some attention to our historical buildings,” he stated.
