A boater from York Region is facing charges after one of the passengers fell into a river and went missing on Tuesday afternoon in the Peterborough area.
According to the Peterborough County OPP, officers were dispatched to the Otonabee River around 2:30 p. m. following reports of a man who had fallen off a boat.
The caller mentioned that they were heading east when another boat passed by, causing one of its four passengers to fall into the water. The caller also noted that the missing individual wasn’t wearing a life jacket and could no longer be seen.
The OPP and their marine unit made contact with the three individuals still on board. They were brought safely to shore as the search for the missing man commenced.
During discussions with these three people, police learned that they had been consuming alcohol, prompting an officer to ask the operator for a breath sample.
The operator, a 28-year-old from Whitchurch-Stouville, was arrested and held for bail.
He faces charges of operation causing death and operating while impaired with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres.
Police confirmed that divers from the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU) located the body of the victim around 9 p. m., pronouncing the 39-year-old man from Oshawa dead at the scene.
