An 18-year-old man has died after his snowmobile hit a tree on a trail near Perth Road 140 on Sunday.

Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Perth County Medical Services, and the Perth East Fire Department responded to the incident. The man was taken to a local trauma center where he was pronounced dead.

Immediately following the crash, the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Club trail between Perth Road 135 and Road 140 was closed for an investigation.

Although the trail has reopened, police indicate that their investigation is still ongoing.

Perth County OPP spokesperson Evan Polini mentioned that safety during snowmobiling season remains a top concern for everyone involved. So far this season, there have been three fatalities in southwestern Ontario.

“These are tragic incidents and most of them are preventable,” said Polini.

He pointed out that some main causes of these accidents include riding on unsafe ice, speeding, and impaired driving.

“Trails typically have a speed limit of about 50 kilometers per hour or less, but riders should be mindful of weather and trail conditions and adjust their speeds accordingly,” he stated.

The OPP also recommends several tips to stay as safe as possible while on the trails:

Wear an approved helmet and suitable clothing, like a suit that provides flotation when crossing ice. Carry ice picks and a basic survival kit that may include a first aid kit, fire starter, snacks, a warmer, drying clothing, and a charged cell phone. Plan your trip carefully ahead of time with someone responsible who knows your return or check-in time. Don’t ride alone whenever you can avoid it. Never consume alcohol or drugs when operating a snowmobile.

Anyone with information about the recent crash is encouraged to contact Perth County OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
