Authorities are actively looking into the vandalism of several Pride flagpoles at schools throughout Perth County that occurred over the weekend, sparking strong responses from both Pride organizations and school leaders in the area.
The Ontario Provincial Police in Perth County reported that they received calls about damaged flagpoles at various school locations between June 13 and 14, 2026. These incidents were noted along Perth Line 72, Perth Road 131, Perth Line 43, and Perth Road 135. Police are currently searching for two male suspects dressed in all black with face coverings who were seen carrying a saw while riding an ATV nearby.
Stratford-Perth Pride emphasizes that this incident goes beyond just property damage. In a statement, they mentioned that Pride flags often serve as one of the few visible signs for young people indicating they are accepted and safe within their educational environments and communities.
The organization pointed out that when these symbols are attacked, “young people understand the message immediately,” highlighting the effects it has on parents, educators, and 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals who have faced discrimination and doubts about their place in society. Stratford-Perth Pride stated that these acts come during Pride Month and follow similar incidents elsewhere in Southwestern Ontario. While police will oversee the investigation, there’s a wider concern regarding the atmosphere that allows such actions to occur.
Huron County Pride also voiced their concerns, labeling these acts as targeted hate crimes. In their statement, they explained that displaying the Pride flag signifies “safer, accepting and inclusive spaces” reminding everyone that “everyone belongs in a community.”
The Avon Maitland District School Board condemned this vandalism as a deliberate act of hatred. They pointed out that the damaged poles displayed both Canadian and Pride flags and noted how this incident diverts resources away from classroom needs. Officials confirmed they are collaborating with law enforcement and have provided video evidence to aid the investigation.
Despite these setbacks, both the school board and advocacy groups affirmed their commitment to replacing the flags and ensuring continued support for students while focusing on maintaining safe and welcoming environments within schools.
