The father of a 10-year-old boy is facing charges for impaired driving causing bodily harm and death after a pick-up truck collided head-on with an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) cruiser near Perth.

Matthew Bigras, 40, from Ottawa, is also charged with dangerous driving causing bodily harm and death.

His son, Michael, was in the truck along with another adult when it struck the marked OPP cruiser on Highway 7 in December 2025. The crash occurred between Drummond School Road and Drummond Concession 7, just east of Perth.

First responders attempted to revive the young boy at the scene before airlifting him to a trauma center by helicopter.

Michael died instantly after being thrown from the vehicle through the windshield, according to his mother’s previous statements to City News. She said he sustained life-threatening injuries that he couldn’t survive and was officially declared brain dead days before his 11th birthday.

Bigras and the other passenger were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The OPP officer suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was also hospitalized.

A fundraiser created to support the family with funeral expenses raised over $80,000. It mentions that Bigras was driving home from their trailer when they hit a patch of black ice, causing their truck to veer into oncoming traffic.

The accused has been released from custody and is set to appear in court at the Ontario Court of Justice in Perth on Aug. 24.
