THUNDER BAY, Ontario, Canada – The Duluth Huskies faced a tough situation, allowing four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning during a 7-5 loss to the Thunder Bay Border Cats on Saturday night.

Jalen Smith’s solo homer in the fifth inning put Duluth ahead 3-2, followed by an RBI single from Brayden Smith. In his next at-bat, Brayden increased Duluth’s lead with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning, making it 5-2.

But in the eighth, Thunder Bay quickly loaded the bases with a double and two walks. Reliever Jude Sundquist came on and struck out one batter but then issued a bases-loaded walk before giving up a bases-clearing triple to Hayden Crites as the Border Cats took control. Crites later crossed home plate on a Jacob Poletto single.

Jalen Smith ended up going 3-for-5 with two RBIs for Duluth, while Dax Hardcastle and Brayden Smith each contributed two hits. Parker Kristall started on the mound, giving up two runs on two hits over four innings. Sundquist took the loss.

Duluth (11-16) will play against Thunder Bay again in Canada on Sunday.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
