Officers from the Ottawa Police Service’s (OPS) tactical unit successfully rescued a woman who was being held at knifepoint inside a home in Kanata on Thursday, bringing a 14-hour standoff to an end and sending the alleged hostage-taker to the hospital with a gunshot wound.

The Ottawa police received a call around 7 a. m. Thursday regarding “a woman being held hostage at knife point inside a home on Finlayson Crescent,” according to Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) in a news release issued Friday.

The SIU reported that officers tried negotiating with the 42-year-old man holding the woman until about 9 p. m., when tactical officers “forced entry into the home and rescued the woman.”

During the rescue, an Ottawa police officer shot the man, who is now in stable condition at the hospital.

The woman was not physically harmed and is currently receiving support, as stated by Ottawa police.

Ottawa police mentioned that their own investigation is still ongoing and charges against the man are forthcoming.

This shooting automatically initiated an investigation by the SIU, which looks into deaths, serious injuries, and allegations of sexual assault involving police, along with any discharge of police firearms to determine if criminal charges are needed.
