Ottawa police report that a third individual has succumbed to their injuries after being rescued from a fire-ridden apartment.

On March 14, firefighters were alerted by several callers regarding a blaze on the 19th floor of a high-rise building located on the 300 block of Somerset Street West. One caller mentioned being trapped on the balcony due to the extreme heat from the fire.

Emergency crews reached the 19th floor, where they encountered flames reaching from floor to ceiling.

The responders advanced with a hose line and began searching for any residents who might be trapped inside. They found three unconscious individuals within the unit while one more was rescued from the balcony, awake and alert.

Paramedics at the scene pronounced two of the three people dead, and rushed the third to a nearby hospital.

On Tuesday, Ottawa police confirmed that this third person passed away in hospital.

The Ontario Fire Marshal is currently looking into what caused the fire.
