A man has lost his life and a child is in serious condition after a three-vehicle accident near Smiths Falls, Ont., that also left three others injured on Friday afternoon, according to emergency services.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a head-on crash involving two cars and an ambulance on Highway 15 in Lombardy, a community located southwest of Ottawa, around 5 p. m., police stated in a release on Saturday.
The driver of one vehicle, a 34-year-old man from the Township of Elizabethtown-Kitley, was pronounced dead at the scene, as reported by police and paramedics. A young child from the same car was airlifted to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa.
The driver and passenger in the ambulance were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Authorities confirmed that it wasn’t transporting any patients at that time.
The driver of the third vehicle sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized.
After the accident, Highway 15 between County Road 1 and County Road 5 was closed for several hours but has since reopened.
