The federal government has put a stop to the expansion plans for Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, mentioning worries about public space, housing, noise, and environmental effects. This decision comes even though Ontario’s Progressive Conservative government continues to support the project.

Transport Minister Steven Mac Kinnon announced on Friday that Ottawa will concentrate solely on the runway safety improvements currently in progress at the airport, ending any chance of the expansion proposal which included a longer runway and the addition of jet aircraft. This would have allowed larger planes to use the airport, which currently only accommodates smaller aircraft.

“At this stage, I can confirm that our focus lies exclusively on the approved safety enhancements,” Mac Kinnon stated. He also mentioned that the federal government won’t pursue any plans that “infringe on treasured public spaces like Little Norway Park or Hanlan’s Point Beach, result in elevated noise, have significant environmental impacts, or hinder Toronto’s ability to build much-needed housing.”

Mac Kinnon noted that over 87,000 responses were collected during Transport Canada’s consultation process regarding Billy Bishop Airport’s future. He said this public feedback played a role in shaping the federal decision.

The minister pointed out that Billy Bishop is an essential part of Canada’s air transportation network and highlighted the recently opened customs pre-clearance facility at the airport, backed by a $30-million federal investment. However, he emphasized that any future discussions about the airport must take into account concerns raised by Toronto residents.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow praised this decision and expressed gratitude towards the federal government for stepping in.

“I want to thank the Prime Minister and the Minister of Transportation for listening to the people of Toronto,” Chow said in her statement. “Thank you to everyone who spoke out, shared your voice, and stood up for our community. Your relentless advocacy has made a difference.”

With no further plans for expansion moving forward, Chow is also urging the Ontario government to return city-owned land linked with this proposal. “Together, we can continue working to protect our waterfront for future generations,” she stated.

The Toronto Port Authority manages Billy Bishop Airport and confirmed it has been notified that Ottawa remains focused on completing its Runway End Safety Areas project.

“The Toronto Port Authority will work to fulfill this initiative and ensure that both city and regional needs are met moving forward,” they said.

Ontario Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria issued a statement affirming that Ontario is still dedicated to pushing ahead with airport expansion efforts.

“We look forward to continuing to work toward expanding Billy Bishop Airport,” Sarkaria remarked, claiming that such a project could bring as much as $8.5 billion annually into Canada’s economy while creating thousands of jobs and enhancing connectivity for travelers and businesses.

Sarkaria added that any future plan should safeguard public spaces while addressing potential noise concerns and environmental impacts alongside improving Little Norway Park and supporting new housing opportunities beneficial for local communities.

The proposal for expanding Billy Bishop was never officially approved; however supporters believed it could significantly enhance its role in regional as well as international travel.
