Scientists have confirmed that a tornado hit a community southeast of London, Ont., following severe thunderstorms earlier this week.

The Northern Tornadoes Project at Western University states that a preliminary investigation using videos and radar data has provided the “necessary evidence” that a tornado touched down in Derwent on Tuesday.

Researchers from the project shared on social media Wednesday that a team will visit the area to assess the tornado’s intensity and path.

Director Dave Sills mentioned earlier that while many were affected by the storm, most of the damage was minimal.

The Northern Tornadoes Project also reported that damage from another storm east of London was due to an EF1 downburst with wind gusts reaching up to 145 km/h.

An EF1 is classified as a moderate storm where a strong of air rapidly descends from a thunderstorm and impacts the ground, causing damaging straight-line winds.

The first tornado of 2026 in Canada, rated with the lowest intensity level, occurred north of London earlier this month, according to the Northern Tornadoes Project.

This report by The Canadian Press was first May 21, 2026.
