A man lost his life and two others were hurt in a crash close to Cornwall, Ont., early Sunday that first led to the closure of Highway 401 in both directions.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a single-vehicle accident that blocked the highway from Boundary Road to County Road 27 in South Glengarry at around 3:30 a. m., Sgt. Erin Cranton said in an email.
A 21-year-old from Clarence-Rockland, Ont., was driving when he rolled over and hit the center median, OPP reported in a release.
He passed away at the scene, according to OPP. Two passengers suffered minor injuries.
The eastbound lanes of the highway have reopened since then, as stated by OPP shortly after noon, while westbound lanes remained shut for cleanup efforts.
Authorities indicated that the closure could take some time and urged drivers to steer clear of the area and seek alternate routes.
