Traveling through northeastern Ontario across the rugged Canadian Shield, you'll encounter long stretches of highway that meander through vast expanses of trees, many flanked by towering walls of ancient gneiss rock. Numerous lakes, iconic to Canada's wilderness, sparkle just beyond several roadways. As you navigate through dense forests and rolling countryside, charming towns pop up occasionally. One such town is Bancroft, Ontario, conveniently located between Toronto and Ottawa. Situated in Hastings County, Bancroft features unique shops and parts of the beautiful York River, offering visitors various outdoor activities. The town's charm mainly comes from its lush forests, serene lakes, and established cottage-country vibe. However, it’s also the friendly residents who make Bancroft special. Here, you'll often meet day trippers from the city alongside locals who are genuinely interested in welcoming visitors. Bancroft is easily reachable by car from both Toronto and Ottawa. From Toronto, expect a drive of three to four hours (depending on traffic) via Highway 401 and Highway 62. If you're coming from Ottawa, it's about a three-hour journey traveling west along Highway 7 and then north on Highway 62. For those planning to ride motorcycles instead of driving cars, there's a popular route known as the Hali Banny path in the Highlands featuring scenic lakeside roads that follow Highway 118 from Haliburton to Bancroft.
