Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced byelections in three ridings: North Vancouver-Capilano in B. C., Beaches-East York in Ontario, and Chicoutimi-Le Fjord in Quebec.
The byelections will take place on Aug. 31, as stated in a news release shared on the prime minister’s website Sunday morning.
Candidates will aim to fill the seats left vacant by former Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson, who is now Canada’s ambassador to the European Union, along with former Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith and former Conservative MP Richard Martel, who has been appointed to the Senate.
The Liberals need to secure at least one victory in these races to keep their control of the House of Commons. Currently, they hold 171 seats (not including Speaker Francis Scarpaleggia).
By the time MPs reconvene after their summer break in late September, it’s expected that the Liberals will have 170 seats due to former Liberal cabinet minister Steven Guilbeault stepping down on Aug. 28.

Mark Carney has called three byelections set for Aug. 31 across North Vancouver-Capilano, Beaches-East York, and Chicoutimi-Le Fjord. The Liberals must win one of these races to maintain their hold on the House of Commons.
Given other vacancies, it’s anticipated that opposition parties will total around 165 seats by late September. Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall has indicated she’ll officially resign on Aug. 31.
Additonally, NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice plans to enter provincial politics and mentioned he’ll wait for the Quebec election announcement before formally resigning.
If the Liberals win at least one race, they’ll return to having 171 seats, allowing them a technical majority where they’d need support from the Speaker for tie-breaking votes.
There’s also one vacant seat where no byelection was called: Saint-Hyacinthe-Bagot-Acton in Quebec. This seat was held by former Bloc Québécois MP Simon-Pierre Savard-Tremblay who stepped down earlier this year for a run in Quebec’s provincial elections.
The Prime Minister’s Office informed on Sunday afternoon that more details regarding Saint-Hyacinthe-Bagot-Acton would be shared “in due course.” The earliest possible date for calling this byelection is Aug. 10 and the latest could be Dec. 19 based on Elections Canada guidelines.
The Liberals plan to nominate Braeden Caley, Mark Carney’s ex-deputy chief of staff, for North Vancouver-Capilano; Tanveer Shahnawaz for Beaches-East York; and Daniel Gobeil for Chicoutimi-Le Fjord.
The Conservatives have announced Stephen Curran as their candidate for North Vancouver-Capilano and Régis Gaudreault for Chicoutimi-Le Fjord via social media posts.
The NDP mentioned Friday evening that they’ve sent out “nomination packages to interested candidates and will provide further updates about nominations soon.”
This Sunday morning, Bloc Québécois revealed Caroline Dubé as their candidate for Chicoutimi-Le Fjord’s byelection.
The Green Party is putting forth Shelley Luce as their nominee for North Vancouver-Capilano according to information on their website.
